What a Design Sstem Actually Includes
A real system has these layers:

- Component library in Figma: every UI element your product uses, built as reusable Figma components with variants and properties.

For teams under 10, early-stage products.
- You get: design tokens in Figma, 15 to 25 components with variants, basic documentation (a Notion page or in Figma itself), handoff to developers who implement in code as needed.
- Timeline: 2 to 3 weeks.
- When it fits: your product has inconsistent design and a small team. You’re not at scale yet, but you’re feeling the pain of every new screen being built from scratch.
- What it doesn’t include: code components (developers build as needed), documentation site, formal contribution model.
Tier 2: The Working System ($20K to $45K)
For teams of 10 to 40, products in active development.

- You get: full token architecture with theming support, 80 to 150+ Figma components with variants and properties, matching code components with test coverage, comprehensive documentation site, formal contribution model with review process, migration plan executed for key product areas, 12 to 20 weeks of implementation and adoption support, training for design and engineering teams.
- Timeline: 4 to 6 months.
- When it fits: multiple product teams need to ship features consistently. You have designers and engineers dedicated to design system maintenance.
Tier 4: The Enterprise System ($150K+)
For teams of 100+, multi-brand or multi-product organizations.
- You get: multi-brand theming architecture, 200+ components, cross-platform components (web, iOS, Android, marketing), advanced governance, dedicated design system team support, long-term maintenance retainer.
- Timeline: 6+ months for initial build, ongoing thereafter.
When you’re Not Ready for a Design System
Under 10 people, single product. You probably need consistency more than a formal system. Shared Figma file with reusable components is enough.
Rapidly changing product direction. If you’re still finding product-market fit, a design system locks in decisions that might change next quarter. Wait.
No designer or engineer to maintain it. Systems without owners rot. Don’t build one you can’t feed.
No pain from inconsistency yet. If your team isn’t complaining about component drift, you’re pre-mature.
